Crown Lengthening

Crown lengthening involves increasing the amount of tooth structure above the gums.

This can be used to improve a “gummy” smile, which is the case when excess gum covers the teeth. Although the teeth may be a normal length, the excess gum can make them appear short. Reshaping the gums in these cases can improve one’s appearance.

In some cases where there is decay or a broken tooth, there may not be enough healthy tooth structure above the gum line for your dentist to fix the tooth properly. Crown lengthening may provide sufficient tooth structure above the gums for your general dentist to place a crown or filling to repair the tooth.
