Treatment of Gum Disease

(Periodontal Disease)

Periodontal disease (or periodontitis) is an inflammatory disease that results in the loss of bone and gum around teeth. This loss of the support structures of the teeth can lead to the teeth becoming loose and even tooth loss.

The earliest form of gum disease is gingivitis. The gums are swollen, red, and bleed easily. If treated at this stage, gum disease is reversible. However, if left untreated, gingivitis can lead to periodontitis and tooth loss.

Periodontitis is an inflammatory disease that results in the destruction of the bone and gums around teeth. As it progresses, the teeth can become loose and require removal. Periodontitis  occurs when the patient’s body responds to  the toxins produced by bacteria under the gumline by destroying its own gum and bone tissue. Treatment involves reducing the bacteria present under the gum line.

Many health conditions can contribute to gum disease. These include smoking, genetics, HIV infection, and certain medications. Periodontal disease is one of the complications of diabetes. The treatment of gum disease can help with the management of other chronic inflammatory conditions, particularly diabetes. For some diabetics, the treatment of gum disease can aid in the improvement of blood sugar levels.

Even the severe forms of gum disease are often painless, sometimes allowing the disease to progress unnoticed by the patient until the teeth become loose. Hence, it is important to be screened for periodontal disease on a regular basis by a dentist or periodontist.
