What is a Periodontist?

A periodontist is a dentist who specializes in the diagnosis, treatment, and prevention of conditions affecting the gum and bone supporting teeth and implants. These conditions include gum disease, exposure of the root surface of teeth and implants (recession), missing teeth, and gummy smiles.

Periodontists have years of additional university training beyond dental school to prepare us for our field. Our goal is to keep teeth for a person’s lifetime whenever feasible; however, when teeth cannot be saved or they are already missing, we can place dental implants to replace teeth.

Periodontists specialize in both the health of the foundation supporting your teeth and in cosmetic gum procedures.
